Education à l'amour

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Liège ~XVIIIth century

Title: Education à l'amour

Artist: Unknown

Media: Pastel

Paper: Blue coloured wove paper

The work was framed and nailed to a chassis with a loose canvas on the back. The pastel was also glued on the sides by numerous strips of tension covered by multiple layers of bad quality paper. Due to this non adapted mounting, there were important undulations and small tears on the edges. The pastel was not fixed and therefore presents large areas of pulverulence and pigment losses.

  • Removal of the frame and the chassis

  • Dry cleaning with museum vacuum

  • Cleaning of the tension strips with slightly humid blotters and mechanical action (scalpel)

  • Cleaning of the frame with swab sticks and water

  • Making of new tension strips with Japanese paper glued on the old tension strips

  • Relaxation in humidity chamber and left to dry in tension

  • Cutting of fluted cardboard (museum quality) for the new support and mounting of the pastel

  • Cutting of Plastazote foam to allow a thin space between the glass and the surface of the pastel

  • Reframing
