Graham Bignell Studio,

London (England)

Date: July 2014 / September 2014

Supervisor: Graham Bignell (Studio director)

Founded in 1981, this London-based studio specialises in the conservation of all archival material and large works on paper and parchment. A comprehensive service is provided to libraries, business archives, institutions, museums, galleries and private clients; including surveys, reports and storage recommendations as well as emergency response.

It allowed me to have a more in-depth experience with team work in a private conservation practice. It also sparked my interest in varnished papers through the treatment of a varnished map, that would later be the subject of my thesis.

During this three month internship, I was able to perform full conservation treatments, from condition reports to matting, framing and rehousing.

  • Dry cleaning, relaxing and flattening of a collection of charts and parchment documents from the XVI to early XX century. Cleaning and repairs of wax seals (consolidation, loss compensation and wax toning)

  • Stain removal and tear repairs

  • Backing and adhesive removal on posters

  • Washing, lining and loss compensation
