Media: Opaque and transparent pigments and black ink

Paper: Cream coloured laid paper

Dimensions: 2995 x 2043 mm (nearly 10 x 7 feet)

This project was performed in collaboration with Paper Conservation intern Emily Farek, Paper Conservator Jane Boyd and Head of Paper Conservation Ken Grant.

The treatment proposal was developed in consultation with TK McKlintock and Studio TKM Associates.

 

  • Contacted other institutions owning copies and conservators of large works on paper

  • Detailed survey addressing the structure (on both recto and verso) and several condition issues (Folds, tears, losses, staining, old infills and retouching, colour fading, verdigris corrosion…)

  • Moved the map into the conservation lab on a custom-made roll of polyester foam covered with paper and Mylar

  • Observations under the microscope and pictures in raking light and transmitted light

  • Consultation with TK McKlintock for the treatment proposal
